Rory McIlroy has highlighted the benefits of decent golf clothing.Players who know they look good in golf apparel often perform better on the course as a result, it has been suggested.

Speaking to Today's Golfer, Rory McIlroy - who comes from Holywood in Northern Ireland - said this is especially true of the younger generation.

The new US Open champion explained: "If you look good on the golf course you feel good and obviously that's going to help you play better as well. All these little things add up to help."

Golf clothing preferences vary depending on the player, the 22-year-old explained, noting some guys opt for tight outfits while others want their get-up to be baggy.

He stated his own favourite is to have clothes that allow him to swing freely without any restrictions.

Bright colours also help golfers stand out from the crowd, McIlroy pointed out, adding he likes shades that set him apart but are not too 'in your face'.
