Denim jeans could become acceptable golf clothing thanks to a new innovation.
Published: 15 September 2011
The golfing world has never looked too favourably on jeans as being suitable golf apparel, but that could be about to change thanks to some innovative thinking.Sheffield University and the London College of Fashion have produced jeans that are able to clean the air around them - and the Guardian has suggested this benefit could finally see the blue material accepted as true golf clothing.
Nanotechnology has been used to develop the items, which break down pollutants from road traffic and heavy industry using photocatalysts that are added to the cloth.
It is hoped the achievement will help remove odours from clothes and possibly even help overcome "the long-standing aversion of golf clubs to denim clothing".
The system is being displayed in the Peace and Winter Gardens in Sheffield - the second of which features more than 2,500 plants - as part of a display entitled Field of Jeans - with 30 pairs placed on bamboos and scattered around the open spaces.
