More ethnic minorities may soon be wearing golf apparel. An increasing number of people from different backgrounds are likely to soon be shopping for golf apparel, thanks partly to schemes devised by the PGA.

The authors of the study Increasing Minority Golf Participation Through PGA Education Initiatives - appearing in the open access journal Sage Open - said much progress is being made to boost the popularity of the game among all types of individuals.

They noted the University of Maryland, Eastern Shore (UMES) - which was founded in 1886 as the Delaware Conference Academy - is the first of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities to be awarded the PGA Professional Golf Management Program accreditation.

"UMES provides an excellent example of how the program was implemented at a historically and predominantly black college," the authors explained.

The PGA has also introduced the First Tee programme, which hopes to benefit minority golfers aged eight to 18, with more than three million youngsters taking part in the initiative so far.
