A former star of the National Hockey League (NHL) in the US swapped his helmet and stick for golf apparel to take part in a celebrity tournament and walked away $1 million (£614,000) richer.Joe Sakic - who has won a Most Valuable Player award, as well as two Stanley Cups - sunk a hole-in-one on the waterfront par three 17th hole at the American Century Celebrity Golf Championship at Lake Tahoe, the Associated Press reports.
He said: "That's a shot you never imagine hitting. I've never even been close before."
American Century, the sponsor of the tournament, has been offering a $1 million prize to whoever can score a hole-in-one on that particular hole for the last three years.
Sakic's effort - which was the fourth one-shot score since the competition began 22 years ago - was hit using an eight iron.
This year's tournament was won by actor Jack Wagner, who sported yellow golf apparel when collecting the trophy.
