Golf apparel could make an appearance at the Olympics in Brazil in 2016 if the sport gains favour before the next International Olympic Committee vote on the matter. The return of the 18-hole game to the showcase is not guaranteed, so good impressions need to be made in the South American nation, the Associated Press reports.
PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem said there is a possibility a World Golf Championship could be taken to the continent - such as the Cadillac Championship at Doral - to drum up interest in the sport.
The industry figure noted a key factor in whether golf clothing is seen in Brazil in 2016 is when the course will be finished, adding: "Once we know that's going to happen, then we can start to work on real options."
Golf has not been included in the London Olympic Games, which is to take place in 2012 - but sports such as football, tennis, hockey and volleyball will feature.
