Golf news: A vote could see the male and female associations merged together.
Published: 15 November 2011
In golf news that could have a significant impact on the future of the sport, a vote is to be held tomorrow (November 16th) to decide whether or not to merge the game's male and female associations in England. It is hoped such a move will help golf shake off any suggestions some of its rules may be outdated, while also stemming any decline in club memberships.
A combining of the English Golf Union - which was founded in 1924 - and the English Women's Golf Association could therefore see male and female golf clothing worn together on a more regular basis.
The two organisations released a joint statement suggesting the negative perceptions of the game being divided would be reinforced if voters do not welcome the merger.
It read: "The sport will be perceived as being out of touch with today's generation and not being reflective of the wishes of men and women playing sport in England."
