Golf news: The Belfry is to change ownership.Individuals who enjoy hitting the fairways in their golf apparel at The Belfry may find they do so under new owners in the not too distant future.

This is because the famous course and resort has been put up for sale - just six years after it was purchased for £186 million.

The venue, which is located in Warwickshire, has played host to the Ryder Cup on four occasions and legends of the game such as Tiger Woods - who turned professional in 1996 - and Seve Ballesteros have all holed putts on the course's greens.

However, the current owners are eager to sell after falling into financial difficulty, which has left the resort facing £105 million of debt.

A source with knowledge on the matter said that the location has been generating money for years, although it is in dire need of a refurbishment.

The representative added: "There is likely to be quite a lot of interest, especially bearing in mind that the Belfry is the PGA [Pro Golf Association] headquarters."
