An increasing number of children are starting to sport golf apparel. An increasing number of young people in Scotland could be sporting golf clothing at present, thanks partly to an ongoing government initiative.

The country's first minister Alex Salmond has claimed more and more youngsters are getting into the game at an earlier age, with the government creating the scheme - entitled Clubgolf - following the nation's successful bid to host the 2014 Ryder Cup, the Sunday Mail reports.

Aimed at providing the opportunity to play golf to thousands of children, the project hopes to ensure every kid has experienced the sport by the time they are nine years old.

More than 180,000 children have been introduced to the game via the introductory game Firstclubgolf, while a number of top golfers - including Glenmuir golf apparel fans Colin Montgomerie and Paul Lawrie - have already leant support to the programme.

Mr Salmond, who is also the MP for Aberdeenshire East, said: "Some of those young sportsmen and women could go on to become this country's golf stars of the future."
