Kilts started as a golf apparel staple, claims the punditThe long and prestigious history of golf fashion has been explored in a recent article by one pundit.

Writing in his Bettor golf blog, Carlos Rome said that golf apparel has transformed from being formal and highly-regulated to fashionable and chic.

In the beginning, Mr Rome claimed the game's Scottish heritage meant players wore animal skins and kilts but as the sport's popularity took off, it has become a matter of high fashion.

"The interesting thing about golf though is that there is no specified dress code; a golfer can practically wear whatever they want to wear," he said.

Mr Rome also looked at the best and worse golf apparel over the years, citing the unique fashion choices of John Daly and the more dapper offerings worn by Tiger Woods.

His insights follow news from the Boston Herald earlier in the month, which revealed that golf fashion icon Rickie Fowler has inspired a "legion" of followers with his brash golf clothing.
