Golf news: 14-year-old to compete in major tournament.Golf apparel is going to be worn by a 14-year-old schoolboy in one of the sport's biggest tournaments.

Alasdair McDougall will compete in this year's Alfred Dunhill Links Championship after being drafted in from the standby list.

The youngster, who was victorious at the St Andrews Links Junior Golf Association Order of Merit this year, got the call up following the withdrawal of former South African rugby player Morne du Plessis.

Mr McDougall will therefore be competing on the same bill as Glenmuir golf clothing fan Colin Montgomerie, as well as teeing off in the same group as St Andrews Links Junior Golf Association honorary president and Glenmuir golf apparel wearer Paul Lawrie - who turned professional in 1986 at the age of 17.

The 14-year-old said: "It is a fantastic opportunity for me. I love playing golf and the chance to play in the same event as some of my heroes is just unbelievable."
