Scottish golf course to lose public grant?

Published: 21 January 2009

Cold conditions mean warm golf apparel is essential.A golf course in Scotland which has applied for a public grant could risk losing its entitlement because of its opening hours, it has been reported.

Players at the Isle of Harris Golf Club can not don their golf apparel and tee off on a Sunday due to religious reasons.

The club, as well as other public facilities on the island, does not open on a Sunday which means that giving it a grant might break legislation to do with equality, according to national sports agency SportsScotland.

Chair of the body Louise Martin said: "SportScotland also has responsibilities under the 2006 equality legislation to ensure that anything it funds is accessible to all, wherever possible, regardless of gender, race, disability, age, religion or belief."

She commented that talks were ongoing with the club and that a compromise was being aimed for.

Scotland's notoriously wet weather could mean that an item of waterproof golf apparel could be a good buy for a gamer planning on visiting the course.
