New American president Barack Obama has been made honorary chairman of the forthcoming Presidents Cup on the PGA Tour.

The 44th US head of state has been attached to the tournament, which is set to run from October 8th to 11th at Harding Park in San Francisco.

PGA tour commissioner Tim Finchem said: "We are honored that President Obama has accepted our invitation to be honorary chairman of the Presidents Cup in October.

"As the eighth head of state to serve in this role, president Obama continues a long tradition of support and leadership dating back to the first Presidents Cup in 1994."

Despite this, the organising team was unable to confirm whether the president would attend any of the games between the US team and assembled international players.

Mr Obama also becomes the sixth US president to take on the role, after Bill Clinton in 2000 and George W Bush in 2005.
