But one notable figure has been added to the list of owners of US Ryder Cup shirts - outgoing president George W Bush.

President Bush recently met with seven of the US Ryder Cup team in the Oval Office at the White House, reports the Associated Press.

It was there that he was given his own replica of the team's shirt and golf sweater, along with a Ryder Cup money clip and golf bag.

Coach Paul Azinger told the newswire that the team were delighted to hear that the president had followed their progress.

"This was the icing on the cake for me and the players," he commented.

"I said to the president how much I appreciated the joy that he and his staff had for us."

Meanwhile, PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem recently told USA Today that he is looking forward to 44th president Barack Obama taking over at the White House and continuing the country's tradition of golf-loving heads of state.
