The Northern Irishman noted he has enlisted the help of fitness expert Jonny Bloomfield to assist him in his quest to shed the pounds - and explained his experience of lifting the Claret Jug has spurred him on.

Clarke - who turned professional in 1990 and recently came second in the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award - explained the victory made him realise his playing days are far from over and prompted him to extend his career through improved health.

In addition, the 43-year-old is having his eyes checked and nutrition monitored to make sure everything is in order, adding: "My alcohol consumption is taking a massive dint ... currently down to zero. However, no pain, no gain and I'm very excited about the route that we're going down."
