Tiger Wood's return will be big golf news this year. The state of the economy is likely to be the main issue affecting the golf sector this year, it has been claimed - which could have knock-on implications for golf apparel.

As well as the golf sport industry, related sectors such as golf apparel manufacturing could be hit.

The Vancouver Sun reports that in 2009, there will be three "big golf stories", according to president of Nike Golf, Sindy Davis.

These are the return to pro play of Tiger Woods, who will don his golf apparel and get back on the course after having knee surgery last year.

Second is Michelle Wie's first full LPGA Tour Season and third is the economic state.

Mr Davis told the newspaper: "People are still buying golf balls and people are still playing rounds of golf, albeit it may be influenced by this economy right now. People are still playing the game."

In related golf news, a launch of a new heated driving range in the US saw many local residents dress up in golf fashion and attend the opening, including Dick Belding.

State News reports that Mr Belding was "clad in a sweater, khaki pants and golf shoes" on his visit.
