Golf apparel sparked a Twitter war between two well-known sportsmen.
Published: 21 October 2010
An innocent picture of an item of golf apparel marked the start of a vicious Twitter war between European Ryder Cup team member Ian Poulter and footballer Robbie Savage.Golf blog Wei Under Par reported that Poulter tweeted a picture of his new golf clothing, ignorant of the fact this was to precede the opening salvo in a bitter war of words.
Savage, who plays for Derby County, took advantage of this opportunity to mock Poulter, who responded with some harsh comments of his own.
"I guess being top 10 in the world isn't too bad. What's it like not even being in the top 1,000 footballers in the world ever?" read one of Poulter's responses.
Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy also added his two cents to the ongoing battle, jumping in to defend Poulter and referring to Savage in highly unflattering terms.
The recent Ryder Cup saw a blanket ban put on tweeting by captains of both the US and European teams.
