Golf apparel wearers to see Olympic Torch in Scotland
Published: 19 May 2011
Regular wearers of golf clothing are being given the chance to look at the Olympic Torch next year.St Andrews is to be included on the torch's UK-wide tour, so keen fans of the game will be able to play a small part in the run-up to the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
This is particularly noteworthy as golf is to be contested at the Olympics for the very first time during the following games in 2016.
As a result, North East Fife MP Sir Menzies Campbell believes the decision to take the torch to St Andrews is very appropriate.
"Where better to bring the torch than the home of golf," he said.
Sir Menzies added that he is delighted it is visiting St Andrews, "along with other famous sporting venues".
Some experts believe golf apparel is likely to see a significant spike in demand when golf becomes an Olympic sport in 2016.
For instance, Peter Dawson of the Royal and Ancient said this represents a huge "grow-the-game opportunity" around the world.
