Women to don golf apparel and tee off at world-famous course?
Published: 06 February 2009
First Minister Alex Salmond has spoken out to say that St Andrews' Royal and Ancient Golf Club should invite St Andrew's university's first female principal Dr Louise Richardson to join its members.Currently, women are not allowed to don their golf apparel and sign up to be members of the club.
In fact, the club has never had a female member since its creation in 1754.
The previous two holders of the principal posts - both men - have been offered membership to the club as a gift.
Salmond said: "The Royal and Ancient Golf Club should follow their longstanding practice of offering membership to the principal of St Andrews University and I am sure that after due consideration they will continue with that honourable tradition."
Labour MSP for Fife Claire Baker said that as the principal of the educational establishment Dr Richardson was at the top of her profession and should be shown the same courtesy as her male predecessors.
