Golfer Colin Montgomerie has been named as the next European Ryder Cup captain, which could see fans investing in new items of golf apparel before the tournament in 2010.

Clothing such as Ryder Cup golf shirts could prove to be popular among fans of the Scottish pro.

Montgomerie himself has played in eight Ryder Cup tournaments, which the Times reports will earn him the respect of this year's players.

Other golfers in the running for the position were Jose Maria Olazabal, Sandy Lyle and Ian Woosnam.

Montgomerie will replace current captain Nick Faldo.

Golfer Paul Casey told the Telegraph: "I have huge respect for Monty and I think from what I have read and when I have spoken to him, he would love to captain a side where he knows all the players."
