Published: 29 November 2011
In golf news that may reflect the recent successes of British players in major tournaments, two competitors have been nominated for a prestigious prize. Both Darren Clarke and Rory McIlroy are on the shortlist for the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award, along with eight other men from different disciplines.
Joining the two golf apparel wearers on the list are the cyclist Mark Cavendish, cricketers Alastair Cook and Andrew Strauss, tennis player Andy Murray, athletes Dai Greene and Mo Farah and the boxer Amir Khan.
The rundown may face criticism for the lack of females included, but one of the presenters of the ceremony Jake Humphrey said: "We've got some amazing women, it's disappointing but it is the way it is. It's not a sexist competition."
Fellow host Gary Lineker - who used to play football for Barcelona and Tottenham Hotspur - added sportswomen are likely to feature heavily in the list next year as a result of the London Olympics.
