Golf news: Young golfer scoops prizeGolfer Chris Wood, who scooped a silver medal in the 2008 Open Championship, has won the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year for 2009.

Wood scooped the award after donning his golf apparel and hitting the golf course in this year's Open, an event in which he gave a "remarkable performance", said Open Golf's website.

The award is judged by representatives from the R&A, the Association of Golf Writers and the European Tour.

"It is brilliant to win this award. Looking at the list of names who have won this title makes me appreciate that I am in good company, alongside people like Sir Nick Faldo, who is probably the greatest English golfer to play the game," Wood commented.

Ian Poulter, who is known for hitting the golf course sporting interesting golf apparel, has also previously scooped the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year prize during his long career.
