Sergio Garcia made the golf news by driving off of a Doha tower.Sergio Garcia signalled the official start of the Commercialbank Qatar Masters by donning his golf apparel and smashing a drive from the top of a 148-metre-high tower in Doha yesterday (January 26th).

The Spaniard held his nerve in blustery conditions to tee off over a highway and into the nearby sea.

Garcia, who currently stands at number 14 in the Official World Golf Rankings, said that such windy weather could make this week's event more interesting.

"The Commercialbank Qatar Masters has the habit to be windy and if it blows up like it's supposed to this week then it will be very challenging," he said.

A strong field is to compete in the tournament, with many of the world's top golfers set to take to the Doha Golf Club course.

Such players include defending champion Alvaro Quiros, world number four Lee Westwood, Martin Kaymer and fan of flamboyant golf clothing Ian Poulter.
