Harrington announces he will not be playing at the Match Play ChampionshipIrish golfer Padraig Harrington will not pull on his golf clothing and tee off in next month's Match Play Championship after committing to the Singapore Open instead.

Both of the tournaments are part of the European Tour schedule and are set to take place in the same week this year.

Harrington is currently ranked world number nine and is a three-times major tournament winner.

As well as Harrington, South African golfer Ernie Els has announced he will not be teeing off at the Match Play Championship in Spain.

Els was victorious at the last Match Play Championship, which took place in 2007, but has chosen not to defend his title and decided to pack his golf clothing for a trip to Singapore instead.

The last win at the tournament was the seventh time the South African has teed to victory at the event.

"I would love to have played in both tournaments because I'd have been defending champion for the Match Play. But it is not possible to be in two places at once," he said.
