Golf news: Players are aiming for a spot in the Open Championship.A number of hopefuls are taking to the fairways in their golf apparel at Royal Johannesburg and Kensington in South Africa in a bid to reach this year's Open Championship.

The players are competing in the 36-hole qualifier to book a spot in the prestigious tournament - and Tim Sluiter has shot to the top of the leader board at the halfway stage.

Having hit a six under par 66, the Dutchman is lying one shot ahead of the Spaniard Jordi Garcia, two in front of Adilson Da Silva of Brazil and three abreast of Canada's Andrew Parr.

A total of 49 competitors are taking part in the qualifier, which will provide three entrants into the Royal Lytham tournament in July.

Sluiter, who has been a professional since 2009, raced to the top of the pack by holing six birdies and will be aiming to continue his success story in South Africa - a country where his Dutch side scooped the 2006 world amateur team championships.
