Organisers of the British Open at Sandwich have declared the event a success after hundreds of thousands of fans made their way to the course to see their favourite players take on one-another in golf apparel.Around 180,000 supporters flocked to east Kent for the tournament, with train operator Southeastern confirming higher than expected numbers used their services so they could catch a glimpse of the players in action, the BBC reports.
Sandwich last played host to the Open in 2003 and tournament organiser Malcolm Booth said he is hopeful the competition will be held at the venue again during the next decade.
He added the sizeable turnout was "testament to how much the people of England really love links golf and this championship".
This year's British Open was won by Northern Ireland star Darren Clarke, who sported a black golf shirt and grey pants as he lifted the famous Claret Jug.
