Golf news: Irish amateur ace 'to turn professional'
Published: 21 May 2009
Irish Open winner Shane Lowry won the event as an amateur but has now announced that he has turned professional.Lowry, 22, spent yesterday (May 20th) talking to schoolchildren from St Cynoc's National School in Ferbane, County Offaly, before announcing today that he would turn pro.
The children were particularly interested in when the amateur was going to turn professional and whether the sponsorship which came with it would mean he would change his golf clothes.
Horizon's - the firm offering sponsorship to Lowry - chief executive and founder Conor Ridge commented: "His life has changed so much in the last week, what Shane needs around him are good people, good advice and good guidance, not cash. He's got plenty of time to make money."
Lowry won the Irish Open with a second round score of 62 - ten shots under par - to lead the way. He beat seasoned professionals of the like of Padraig Harrington and American John Daly to take the title on the final day.
