Irish amateur golfer Shane Lowry is now expected to turn professional following his success at the 3 Irish Open.
Published: 18 May 2009
Shane Lowry yesterday (May 17th) became the third amateur player to win a European Tour event. In achieving this, he also became the first player to win on his debut appearance. The player had a chance to win the even in regulation play, but he missed a four-foot putt on the 18th hole, meaning that he had to play further against his partners Robert Rock.
As the final day of play got underway, the two players were out in front of the rest of the pack. By the end of the day, Lowry had built up a lead to finish 17 under par, while Rock finished 15 under.
Sweden's Johan Edfors finished in third place on 13 under.
Wet and windy conditions affected play and all the top three finishers ended the day with rounds of 71.
Lowry follows Spain's Pablo Martin and New Zealand's Danny Lee in winning a Tour event while still an amateur player.
Following his victory, the Irishman is now expected to turn professional.
