Golf news: Royal Portrush is to hold the Irish Open golf championship.
Published: 05 January 2012
A number of famous golf apparel wearers will soon be playing at Royal Portrush Golf Club as it has emerged the venue is to stage the Irish Open. The European Golf tour is to make an announcement tomorrow (January 6th) and a senior source has told the BBC that the course will hold the tournament this July.
This means the staging of the competition will arrive at the location - which last played host to a major contest in 1951 - one year earlier than expected.
A number of familiar faces are likely to display their golf fashion at the Northern Ireland location for the event and these could include native players who have enjoyed plenty of success of late, such as Darren Clarke and Rory McIlroy.
Indeed, these competitors saw their 2011 finish on a high as both were included in the Queen's New Year's Honours List, with Clarke receiving an OBE and McIlroy collecting an MBE.
