Rory McIlroy is hoping to don his golf apparel and make history in this week's Omega Dubai Desert Classic.

Rory McIlroy is looking forward to donning his golf clothing and teeing off in this week's Omega Dubai Desert Classic, as a place in the history books potentially awaits him.

The young Northern Irishman made the golf news last year by breaking into the top ten in the Official World Golf Rankings despite being just 20 years of age.

And he recorded his first ever professional victory in 2009 at the Emirates Golf Club in the same tournament that he returns to on Thursday (February 4th).

If he is triumphant for a second successive year, he will be the first to achieve the feat in the European Tour event since its inception in 1989 and become the youngest player to successfully defend a European Tour title in its history.

"After what happened last year, the Desert Classic will always have a special place in my heart and I am really looking forward to returning to defend my title," he said.
