Muirfield could once again be the source of golf news when it hosts the Open. The British Open is due to return to Scotland's Muirfield links course in 2013, it has been confirmed.

Organisers of the event Royal and Ancient (R&A) have confirmed that the tournament will return to Muirfield after an 11-year absence.

Director of championships at the R&A David Hill said: "We are delighted that the Open is returning to Muirfield, an outstanding championship course that consistently produces a very worthy champion."

It will be the 16th time that the oldest championship in golf will take place at the course.

The tradition of holding the British Open on a links course at a coastal location will continue here. Strong coastal winds can regularly have a sway on events taking place at such courses.

Scotland is set to host the Open both this and next year - with this year's championship scheduled to take place at Turnberry, while St Andrews will host the 2010 event.
