Charl Schwartzel has made the golf news by being named as the European Tour Player of the Month for January.

Charl Schwartzel has been named as the European Tour Player of the Month after he triumphed in back-to-back tournaments last month.

The South African produced marvellous performances in his homeland, taking home the Africa Open following a 20-under-par 272 and the Joburg Open a week later after shooting a 23-under 263.

In doing so, he became only the fourth South African in history to win consecutive European Tour tournaments.

Ernie Els, Dale Hayes and Richard Sterne are the other three golfers to achieve the feet.

Schwartzel said: "Obviously, being named as The European Tour's Player of the Month is a nice achievement to have. I am very pleased with the award, since you can never have enough trophies!"

He is currently playing in the Omega Dubai Desert Classic at the Emirates Golf Club and is tied for fifth place on six under par.

English golfer and world number four Lee Westwood is currently above him, tied for second place on seven-under.
