Tiger Woods will not be sporting golf apparel at the British OpenFans wondering what golf fashion their heroes adopt during the British Open may be disappointed to learn one of the game's biggest stars has pulled out of the tournament.

Tiger Woods - who recently hit the headlines amid allegations of extra-marital affairs - will not be sporting golf apparel during the Open Championship at Royal St Georges because two serious injuries to his left leg have ruled out his participation.

The problems have taken longer than anticipated to heal and mean one of the most famous sportsmen in the world will have to miss out on the third major of the year.

It is believed Woods - who has fallen to 17th in the world rankings after having enjoyed a prolonged spell as the planet's number one golfer - personally rang up Peter Dawson, chief executive of the Royal and Ancient Club, to express his regret over the absence.

Mr Dawson said: "Naturally, we are sorry that a player of his calibre isn't able to join us at Royal St George's."
