Darren Clarke sported black golf apparel when he won the Open.It appears towns and cities that host famous players in their golf apparel for major tournaments can expect to reap economic rewards as a result.

This is because new research commissioned by the Royal & Ancient Golf Club (R&A) and carried out by investigators at Sheffield Hallam University has revealed the Open Golf Championship in Sandwich earlier this year brought around £77 million into Kent, the BBC reports.

Peter Dawson, chief executive of the R&A, explained the county received a direct economic windfall of £25 million that was supplemented by TV earnings worth over £50 million.

He noted: "That television exposure for east Kent and the whole area is worth a fortune in terms of future for the tourist industry and hopefully for inward investment too."

In excess of 180,000 fans turned up to the four-day competition in July, where Darren Clarke of Northern Ireland - who turned professional in 1990 - emerged victorious in his golf apparel.
