Golf news: Economic benefits come with hosting major competitions.
Published: 24 November 2011
It appears towns and cities that host famous players in their golf apparel for major tournaments can expect to reap economic rewards as a result. This is because new research commissioned by the Royal & Ancient Golf Club (R&A) and carried out by investigators at Sheffield Hallam University has revealed the Open Golf Championship in Sandwich earlier this year brought around £77 million into Kent, the BBC reports.
Peter Dawson, chief executive of the R&A, explained the county received a direct economic windfall of £25 million that was supplemented by TV earnings worth over £50 million.
He noted: "That television exposure for east Kent and the whole area is worth a fortune in terms of future for the tourist industry and hopefully for inward investment too."
In excess of 180,000 fans turned up to the four-day competition in July, where Darren Clarke of Northern Ireland - who turned professional in 1990 - emerged victorious in his golf apparel.
