John Daly's golf trousers could become part of the history of the London 2012 Olympic GamesGolf trousers could have their own part to play in the mythology surrounding the London 2012 Summer Olympic Games, according to the Independent.

Simon Turnbull writes for the publication that John Daly could become an Olympic role model if golf is introduced as an event at the 2012 Games - with his golf trousers an element of his overall appearance.

"There is always the prospect of John Daly presenting himself as a new-age Olympic role model, sporting a pair of his Smarties-design trousers," he contends.

He adds that there is a precedent for the inclusion of golf in the shortlist of Olympic events, when Canadian entrant George Lyon took the gold medal in St Louis in 1904.

Scheduling issues four years later - when London was the host city for the 1908 Olympic Games - meant Lyon was the only entrant and was offered the chance to reclaim his title by default.

American golfers had been unwilling to journey across the Atlantic, according to the Independent, while Britons were otherwise engaged in domestic competition.

However, Lyon refused the medal out of respect for the sport.

The golfer's other sporting achievements included making 238 not out while playing cricket for Rosedale Cricket Club in 1894.
