Players may need their golf sweaters for the 2014 Open Championship. The top players in the world will be packing their golf apparel and heading to Hoylake's Royal Liverpool Golf Club after it was announced that the venue will play host to the 2014 Open Championship.

And given that the course is situated on the Wirral coast, the seaside weather may cause the athletes to bring more golf sweaters and waterproofs than T-shirts.

The R&A revealed today (February 16th) that the prestigious tournament is set to return to venue, which last hosted the event in 2006, when Tiger Woods picked up the victory in front of a 230,000-strong crowd.

Commenting on the news, Paul Cassidy, captain of the golf club, expressed his delight that it had been chosen for the showcase.

"We are very proud of our club's rich heritage and the many memorable golfing moments staged at Hoylake since our founding in 1869," he added.

The current Open champion is Stewart Cink, who finished top of the leaderboard last year ahead of Tom Watson.
