Westwood 'almost quit' golf
Published: 24 November 2009
Golfer Lee Westwood has spoken out about almost quitting the game during a performance slump in the past.According to Westwood, he almost hung up his golf clothing and quit the game back in 2001, after putting in a number of disappointing performances in several golf events.
"I've been through a lot in the last eight, nine years. I know what it's like to play poorly. I was ready to give up the game when I shot an 81 [in the 2001 Great North Open] at Slaley Hall and missed the cut," he said.
However, the player has had a much better 2009 and has recently been crowned top of the European Tour money list following a victory at the Dubai World Championship.
After donning his golf clothing and heading to the course, Westwood finished the Dubai event with an impressive score.
Following the end round, the Telegraph said "he is at last becoming the golfer we thought he might be when he last occupied a top-five slot nine years ago".
