Golf news: Westwood scoops Golf Writers' prize

Golfer Lee Westwood has been awarded the Golf Writers' Trophy, it has been announced.

The golfer - who is currently European number one - has won the award two times before, as has Seve Ballesteros.

Westwood has had a good year so far, donning his golf clothing and taking part in a number of tournaments, including the Dubai World Championship and the Open Championship at Turnberry.

Commenting on this win, Westwood said: "I am delighted to receive the award once again. It is a particular honour to have been chosen for the third time and to become one of only two players, alongside Seve, to have won it three times. That means an awful lot to me, especially when I consider the great players we have had on the European Tour."

He will be presented with his award next July, before the Open Championship kicks off at world-famous golf course St Andrews.
