Hybrid shoes 'are becoming a staple of golf fashion'Hybrid shoes are becoming a staple of the golf fashion world it has been claimed.

Writing for the PGA's Fashion Insider column under his pseudonym of the Man in the Black Hat, Mike McAllister mused on the rise of the attire.

He claimed that spiked shoes date back to the 19th century, but explained that their popularity has flagged in recent years.

The golf fashion guru went on to cite the comments of Ian Poulter, who recently lamented the fact that spikes had made the greens "crusty" at the recent Arnold Palmer Invitational.

As such, he noted that many players are turning to hybrid shoes, which contain a mix of mainstream style and sporting ruggedness.

Ryan Moore is a particularly vocal proponent of this trend and claimed that those who opt not to wear metal cleats should be allowed to pat down marks made by spikes.

Mr McAllister recently set out a number of footwear tests he would be performing in coming weeks in an article for the Chapeau Noir Golf blog.
