Paul Lawrie has defended Montgomerie's choicesScottish golfer Paul Lawrie has defended European Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie's wildcard choices for the upcoming international event.

Speaking to the Daily Record, the Glenmuir-sponsored golfer claimed that players who had failed to qualify due to a lack of European events should not blame the rules.

"No matter which way skipper Colin Montgomerie went there was always going to be disappointment for some players. That's why they are the captain's picks. They are his choices," he said.

His comments follow a statement from last month in which Lawrie told the Daily Record that the European team need not fear a "revolt" if all wildcards were given to players who had favoured the FedExCup over Gleneagles.

Many pundits were shocked at Montgomerie's decision to leave Justin Rose out of the team, despite the fact that he had neglected a number of European Tour events over the season and required a wildcard pick for entry.
