Held in Costa Azahar, Spain, the Glenmuir-sponsored player looked chic in his stylish golf apparel as he managed a whirlwind round, featuring seven birdies.

His excellent play means that the 41-year-old stands two shots clear of the pack following his promising round.

The next highest scorer is French golfer Jean-Baptiste Gonnet, who requires a good result at the Castello Masters to move into the top 115 places in the Race to Dubai and retain his Tour card for another year.

Also at the event is Jose Maria Olazabal, who has returned to competitive play following a prolonged battle with illness.

In the Daily Record last month, the Scottish golfer defended the wildcard choices of Colin Montgomerie in the lead-up to this year's Ryder Cup.

Lawrie claimed that players who had not played sufficient European Tour events to qualify should not blame the captain for their failure to be picked.
