Mickelson 'closing the gap on golf's number 1'
Published: 08 May 2009
There could a new number one in the golf world for the first time in more than four years if all goes well for Phil Mickelson this weekend.Mickelson could depose Tiger Woods from the top spot should he win at Sawgrass and Woods finishes outside of the top three, something which he hopes will come to fruition in the coming days.
With Woods playing below his best due to his recent return from injury, many believe this to be the best opportunity for Mickelson to take the coveted number one spot.
Mickelson said: "I think when I come to look back on my career, that it would mean a lot to me to be able to say that at one point I was number one."
Meanwhile, US golfing legend Lanny Wadkins has been inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame.
He donned his golf attire to play in a total of eight Ryder Cup teams over the years and captained the team in 1995. During his career he was victorious in 21 competitions.
