People in Russia may soon need to get their golf apparel at the ready as construction work has now begun on a major new PGA golf course in the country.

To be named PGA National Russia, the 18-hole 7,400 yard golf course will be based at the Zavidovo Resort community set 130km north-west of Moscow.

Another nine-hole course will also be established at the site as part of a PGA National Academy, with a practice section, swing studio and teaching facilities.

Constantin Zabrodin, chief executive of the Zavidovo Lake Resort Development, claimed the course will become one of the best in Russia, with an "extremely high standard" of services.

He also said it will be "built with the purpose of hosting major golf tournament events and further promoting the game in this country with the emphasis [on] juniors, elite amateurs and future professionals".

"Branded as PGA National Russia, it is going to become not just an advanced training centre, but a headquarters of Russian professional golf," Mr Zabrodin added.

In other news, US golf star Paul McGinley has called for an overhaul of the world rankings system to favour those who play more often, reports BBC News.
