Golfers may be fitter than many think, as walking round the golf course burns a large amount of caloriesTeeing off on the golf course could help to improve fitness, in golf news that could interest regular players.

According to a study by Neil Wolkodoff, director of the Rose Center for Health and Sports Sciences in Denver, playing golf requires physical effort as well as good co-ordination.

Tallahassee.com reports that the study saw the game of eight male amateur players scrutinised.

The findings suggest that for golfers playing a nine hole game, 721 calories could be burned off by walking.

Golfers who walk 36 holes each week could find they burn off nearly 3,000 calories, the study claims.

When playing a game of golf, players often carry bags or items of golf apparel round the course.

Mr Wolkodoff's study found that those golfers who walked around the course carrying a bag actually recorded higher scores.
