Daniel McAleese, from Loreto College Coleraine, donned his golf apparel and played his competition at the Westerwood Golf Club, Glasgow, the Coleraine Times reported, which could have seen him pack lots of golf sweaters to cope with any blustery weather he may have encountered.

His score of +3 landed him with an expenses-paid trip in January to Spain, where Mr McAleese will play in a five-day tournament on four different courses during the European Open Under 16 Champions' Week.

As well as practising, he may also want to invest in new golf clothing for the event, an opportunity he landed after beating the runner-up by one point.

"Daniel was congratulated on this wonderful achievement by Maureen McCullough, Head of PE at Loreto College and principal Brian Lenehan," the publication stated.

The Westerwood Golf Club has an 18-hole course and its signature hole is known as the Waterfall hole and was designed by Seve Ballesteros.
