The possible on-course talent of youngsters should be being picked up when they are younger, one sector expert has claimed. In an interview with the Edinburgh News, Wilson Bryson, who has been the captain of the national boys' team and on the selection committee of the Scottish Golf Union, said that while there is much raw golfing talent in Scotland, "it's a bit like a production line".
"We are stuffing a lot of players on to the conveyor belt but only a few are dropping off at the other end," he pointed out.
Mr Bryson told the newspaper that he personally believes that picking out the best young talent earlier in life may help.
He was commenting after a performance from 16-year-old Italian Matteo Manassero and went on to ask why Scotland does not produce youngsters of such calibre.
Manassero won the Amateur Championship back in June, making him the youngest player in the event's history to do so.
