German golfer takes the lead after a day of blustery play which may have made a golf sweater a good choice of golf clothing.

Gal takes the Open leadSandra Gal has taken a one-shot lead at the Ricoh British Open, after narrowly bettering the score of Angela Stanford and Kim Song-Hee.

After donning her golf apparel and taking to the course, 24-year-old Gal shot a three-under par of 69, edging her in front of the American and South Korean golfers.

Gal, who is from Germany, is currently ranked the 69th best female golfer in the world.

It was a surprising day for many of the other players, as world number one Lorena Ochoa only managed to get a 75 and defending champion of the tournament, Shin Ji-Yai, finished the day with a 77.

The Times golf correspondent John Hopkins called the on-course conditions "brutal", noting that with a westerly wind of 35 miles an hour, the Royal Lytham & St Annes course is impossible to play on.

In such conditions, golfers may find that a pair of warm golf gloves, or a golf hat, help to protect them from the elements and allow them to play to their best ability.
