Lawrie is behind Peter Hansson on the leaderboard
Published: 08 December 2011
Glenmuir golf apparel fan Paul Lawrie has given himself a chance of achieving Dubai World Championship glory after an outstanding opening round of 65.The Scottish professional carded the seven under par score at the Jumeirah Golf Estates establishment in the Middle East today (December 8th) and enjoyed a brief stint at the top of the leaderboard.
Despite the fact that Sweden's Peter Hansson then went one better by shooting a first round total of 64, Lawrie remains handily placed in second place, some three shots clear of his nearest rival Ross Fisher.
Prior to the start, the tournament had been widely billed as a battle between the world numbers one and two Luke Donald and Rory McIlroy to determine who would finish top of this season's European money list.
But, for now, Lawrie and Hansson have stolen the show and the Aberdeen-based professional was delighted with his effort.
"I gave myself an awful lot of chances - my iron play was fabulous," he noted.
