Extreme golfers may need waterproof golf apparel before teeing off in Maui.A mountainous golf course being used in this year's Mercedes Benz Championship could necessitate the purchase of a new item of golf apparel, such as a golf sweater, to keep warm and dry.

The Kapalua course on the "rugged" Maui coast can be so severe that it is often referred to as playing extreme golf, reports Sports Illustrated.

According to the source, golfer Geoff Ogilvy often refers to games played there as extreme, due to the wind, elevation and greens.

However, he comments that the course is fun to play, despite being tiring.

Sports Illustrated reports that Mr Ogilvy recorded an average score of 73.875 on his last two visits to the course.

Talking of his opening round at the course, played this week, he says: "I didn't do anything amazing, but I didn't do anything badly. I just played nice.''

In related news, sports writer Shane Bacon has written that he doesn't believe 2009 will be a year for Tiger Woods to win "the majority of majors" on the AOL Fanhouse golf page.

"I think Tiger can still win and will win the majority of majors from 2010 on, but I don't see it this year," he commented.
