But with enough variety, the broadcaster notes that you should still not know what you are unwrapping on Christmas morning.

Athens, Georgia resident Brandt Halbach is among those who have made use of a wish list in the past.

He tells CNN: "My wife is not a golfer, so without this service she wouldn't have understood the specific club to get without asking me directly.

"And because I registered for a wide variety of things, the gift was still a surprise."

However, lists for other occasions - such as housewarmings - have been criticised as potentially seeming tacky or greedy.

Golf gifts need not come with big-ticket prices, as online conversation site Gather notes.
