The days of brightly coloured trousers and ill-fitting jumpers on the golf course are – mostly - long gone. The modern golfer blends style with wear-ability, sportswear with the catwalk. You could attribute the rise in standards to social media making professional golfers more visible, or you could put it down to the increase in prize funds allowing players to choose only the best clothing for the clubhouse.

Whatever the reason, 2015 saw a number of top golfers looking their best.

Here are our 5 best dressed golfers of the year…

Darren Clarke

From his ‘salt and pepper’ hair, occasional designer stubble and the cigars poking out the side of his mouth, Clarke could quite easily be the older brother of George Clooney. And while he doesn’t have traditional movie star looks, he makes the most of his grizzled features with his choice in clothing.

On the course, he keeps it simple and stylish. Dark blues, blacks and the occasional splash of white ooze class. He’s been known to sport a rather stylish cardigan when hitting the big tournaments, and even managed to pull off bright red trousers at this year’s Champions' Challenge in St Andrews.

Off the course, whether posing for Esquire magazine or on TV - he opts for a smart, understated look that suits his age. Grey suits, a plain black Tux or skinny fit jeans and a simple scarf all look great on him.

At the other end of the fashion spectrum to Clarke is Rickie Fowler. The young Californian embraces the full colour spectrum, with a particular fondness for orange. But he’s never garish or over the top with his choices, using colour to accent his outfit.

On the course, his subtly stripped polo shirt worn at the Augusta National managed to get blue, grey and yellow into one top while still looking like something you’d happily wear on a night out. Elsewhere, vivid blues have been offset with his go-to greys and silvers.

Off the course, he likes to keep things simple with a classic t-shirt and jeans combo his staple. But he can smarten up nicely opting for charcoal suits at red carpet events.

The Spanish star brings a bit of European style to the tour. His style is sporty yet fashionable with a wardrobe that contains everything from plain white to lime green.

On the course, his outfits are always well co-ordinated - the on-trend white trousers at the Augusta National that seemingly blended into his white and blue striped top proved a favourite. At the Open at St Andrews, he went for a muted colour scheme of dark greys and navies to reflect the moody Scottish weather.

Of the course, he’s as sporty as he is on it. Numerous visits to the Alps showed off his winter collection while his Christmas present was a plain black Omega watch – very stylish.

Henrik Stenson

It’s easy to be stylish when Hugo Boss designs your shirts. The Swede keeps things simple opting for the classic polo, along with the occasional bit of blond stubble, to highlight his Nordic origins.

On the course, we particularly liked his navy and brown top worn with style at the World Golf Championships-Cadillac Championship in March, and his black and blue zip-up as seen during the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship.

Off the course, he likes to mix it up, modelling light grey suits for his sponsor or going for the casual jeans, shirts and white trainers look while on TV.

Miguel Angel Jimenez

Some people have a sense of style that’s all their own - Miguel Angel Jimenez is one of those people. From his trademark red ponytail to mirrored aviators and cigar, he looks like he’s come straight out of an action movie.

On the course, he loves a colourful outfit to reflect his colourful personality. From bright orange to complement his ginger locks to more classical colours it’s never really about what he wears but how he wears it – with panache and confidence.

Off the course, the hair comes down and the suits come on. A highlight was the black suit with white pocket square worn at Wimbledon but we’re also fond of the pink jumper and floral shirt combo seen at the Arabian Nights Evening event during the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open.
